Ik belde uit zorg voor Grace, mijn Pomeranian op 24 april. Zwakke maag, at al een week niet, misselijk soms, diarree goed. Nog vlak daarvoor bij vaccinatie gecontroleerd en ze is gezond. Ik wil niet zo maar langs komen omdat bij Anicura de consultkosten elk jaar maar stijgen. Tussen 60- 80 euro Alleen buikje voelen schiet ik niks mee op. Oh wilt u echo? Over de 200 euro. Nee, ik ga af op wat de arts zegt en als hij dat nodig acht. Ja mw, uw hondje is laatst ook loops geweest is gevaarlijk. U maakt zich zorgen en wij nu ook, straks heeft ze de ziekte .. en kan ze doodgaan en word ik verantwoordelijk gehouden! Pardon? Ik ga niet van het ergste uit. Kortom een vervelend gesprek met de telefoniste.Ik kon dezelfde dag terecht. Ik had de keuze uit 3 tijdstippen. Dat snap ik. De laatste tijd zie ik alleen maar dat het zo rustig is daar. Men gaat helaas niet meer 1,2, 3 gelijk voor iets 'lulligs' naar de dierenarts. Zoekt andere oplossingen. De artsen zijn wel aardig maar altijd kassa. Ik heb m'n 2 Pomeranians uitgeschreven. Inmiddels bij een fantastische andere dierenarts geweest in Rotterdam en ingeschreven. Hele redelijke prijzen. 3e keer zelfs nazorg ( bij Anicura ondenkbaar had ik gewoon 70 euro minimaal kunnen aftikken). Conclusie Grace: Advies dieetvoer en wellicht IBS. M'n hondje gaat niet dood!

If you have a pet with an (chronic) illness, it’s probably best to go elsewhere if you want to give them quality of life and a fighting chance. The people were friendly, the practise was clean and the one consulting vet was skilled with my difficult pet. However what made me switch in the end was the lack of compassion in the treatment of my cat’s kidney disease. He had a big operation on his teeth which he had a hard time recovering from. We monitored him for two weeks at home not eating and were calling the vet every other day or so because we were unsure he was unwell from the operation or from the disease. We tried all kinds of things, however i knew from prior experience we hadn’t tried the option of iv or regular subcuts.

Subcuts play an important part in managing kidney disease and helping them feel better and vets offer to teach you to do this at home, because 1) it needs to be done regularly 2)its relatively safe 3) its financially cheaper 4) it gives the animal minimal stress and 5)it helps the sick animal feel better. Anicura has a policy that they do NOT allow pet owners to do this. I called around to many practises in Rotterdam, and only Anicura does not allow this while all other practises have the option.

What ended up happening was that my cat struggled hard for 2 weeks, while i brought him in once a week for subcuts at Anicura (which is not enough in hindsight because his bloodwork showed his kidneys were crashing) and desperately trying medication. He was so miserable and unwell. Despite this, still no budge or real compassion from Anicura about this policy. Instead they offered me to take him for a kidney scan at a different location of Anicura. That’s when I changed vets. Most likely what would’ve happened if i had stayed, they would see on the scan that his kidneys are not doing well and they would recommend to bring him to the vets for subcuts regularly. Which they will of course charge you for, and the costs will add up. All while the cat is stressed from being moved here and there. I think during our time here, my cat suffered a lot (showed in bloodwork), and had we stayed, he might have not made it. The treating vet (different from the consulting vet) seemed also afraid of him because he can be difficult and had a demeanor like she had given up on him, which did not instill me with confidence.

After about three very hard weeks, we visited a new vet, we were given everything needed for subcuts and he ate immediately after the same day and stabilized and has been stable since thankfully.

Anicura, i understand you have policies out of safety and other reasons. But i urge you to please do your research and to do it better. Subcuts are not as dangerous as you make them to be, they are done all over the world by pet owners, who are instructed, monitored and supported by compassionate vets. You probably make money by keeping this at your practise (they charge about €45 per subcut and most vets recommend at least 2 times a week for subcuts to be effective and consistent) but this is not in the benefit of the animal, especially when they are suffering. All the while the pet owner has to take care of them, wrap their heads around this disease and carry this financial burden that comes with it. This is inaccessible and unacceptable.

Personally, this is not about money. I found it jarring that there seemed little compassion, activeness from them and thought for the animal because of Anicura’s policy. Had i not known about kidney disease from prior experience, i would have likely continued going to Anicura thinking this is the norm and stressing out my cat terribly every week and cutting his quality of life down, never knowing there are other options out there. I often think about those two weeks at Anicura, the hit my cat took and what that took of him and how it affects his disease’s runtime. Other pet owners: you shouldn’t have to rely on prior experience to know how to take care of your sick pet. Your vet should be someone you go to for compassionate help, proactiveness and accurate advice.
