I brought my dog, Sheila, to this clinic about 2–3 weeks ago for localized itching. The veterinarian told me the cytology result would be available the next day. Instead, I received no written communication for weeks. There was one missed call from a Dutch number — no voicemail, no email, no WhatsApp — despite the clinic having all my contact details.

I travel extensively for work, often across time zones, so I sometimes miss calls. In this case, the call came from a different number than the clinic’s main line I had saved for booking, so I had no way to know it was them or that I should return that specific call. When I eventually contacted the clinic, I was told the cytology was positive for bacteria with inflammatory cells and that treatment was needed.

I was also told there is a policy that if a client misses a call, the client must call back. This policy was never disclosed to me at the appointment or in writing. I had hoped that, knowing my dog was ill, the veterinarian would ensure I actually received this information. Instead, it felt like the priority was to show that “the rules were followed,” rather than to make sure my dog received timely care.

We are heartbroken over the loss of our beloved cat, Luna. Our experience with Dierenkliniek Vondelpark highlighted significant negligence and a lack of proper equipment, which we believe ultimately led to her painful passing.

Initially, we brought Luna to the vet due to her shortness of breath, where a scan revealed a potential lung tumor based on a “mass behind the left lung.” Throughout that week, I contacted the clinic multiple times and visited almost every day, expressing my growing concerns as Luna’s condition deteriorated.

During her treatment at Dierenkliniek Vondelpark, we took Luna to the MCD emergency clinic for immediate help, but after being told they didn’t find anything in her lung, we returned to Dierenkliniek. Despite her alarming temperature of 40.5°C, Dierenkliniek Vondelpark lacked the necessary resources to conduct a thorough examination. Instead, we were sent home with antibiotics and Prednisol and advised to call back the next day. Unfortunately, Luna continued to decline, becoming increasingly lethargic and refusing to eat or drink. Eventually, we had to bring her back to MCD for critical care, where urgent tests revealed a perforation in her small intestine. Although the surgery appeared to go well, Luna’s condition remained critical, and after two days, she sadly passed away.

Adding to our grief was the information we received at MCD, which confirmed that Luna did not have lung cancer, contradicting the initial speculations made by Dierenkliniek Vondelpark. Had the vets taken immediate and appropriate action—rather than sending us home and delaying necessary tests—we believe we could have spared Luna from her suffering.

No words can bring our Luna back or alleviate the profound sadness we feel. We firmly believe that the negligence displayed by Dierenkliniek Vondelpark significantly contributed to her suffering and tragic ending.
